A man, identified as Joumaa al-Sajem was shot dead on February 5, 2024, by as yet unidentified gunmen on a passing motorbike as he sat in his son’s car in al-Hesan town in western rural Deir Ez-Zour governorate. The victim’s son, Ibrahim Joumaa al-Sajem, a commander in the Syrian Democratic Forces’ (SDF) General Security division, was injured in the attack. The area is under the SDF’s control.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) is still trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident. We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians in their areas, to investigate this incident, and to make the investigation’s findings known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a genuine political transition process towards democracy within a fixed timetable.
