A 13-year-old boy, identified as Tamer Mamdouh al-Nayef from al-Dark al-Kabira town in northern rural Homs governorate who was working as a bus conductor, was shot dead on January 9, 2024 by gunmen we have not yet been able to identify, but suspect were ISIS affiliates. The gunmen targeted the bus on which Tamer was working, which was transporting regime troops at the time in western al-Sakhna city in the badiya ‘desert’ of Tadmur in eastern rural Homs governorate.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that the attack also killed 10 regime servicemen and injured 22 others.

The area is under the control of Syrian regime forces. SNHR is still trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident.

We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians in their areas, to investigate this incident, and to make the investigation’s findings known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a genuine political transition process towards democracy within a fixed timetable.
