Hamed Ayed al-Hamed, a ten-year-old boy from al-Baghouz town in the eastern suburbs of Deir Ez-Zour, was killed on January 17, 2023, by an explosion whose source we have not yet been able to identify (though we believe it was a landmine), while he was herding sheep in the badiya (desert area) around al-Baghouz town, which is under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights is still trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident.

We call on the controlling parties to uphold their responsibilities to protect civilians living in areas under their control, and to launch an investigation into this incident and make its details known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a true political transition process to implement democracy under a concrete timetable.
