A man, named as Adnan Ajaj al Abbou, from Kherbet al Ahmir which is administratively a part of Tal Hmais town in the northeastern suburbs of Hasaka governorate, was arrested by Syrian Democratic Forces personnel in January 2021. Since then, he has been classified as forcibly disappeared, with the SDF denying his arrest and preventing anyone, even a lawyer, from visiting him. On September 25, 2021, his family was informed by a person released from an SDF detention center that Adnan had died due to torture and ill health, which deteriorated during his imprisonment, in a detention center of SDF in Hasaka governorate.
We can confirm that at least 3,817 Syrian citizens are still detained or forcibly disappeared in the SDF’s detention centers, constituting a grave threat to the detainees’ wellbeing.
SNHR notes that approximately 71 Syrian citizens have died due to torture in SDF’S detention center.
