Mahmoud al Demashqi from al Sbeina town in south of Damascus suburbs governorate is a media activist and the director of Daawa Foundation for Social Affairs. SNHR documented that he was arrested by the Syrian National Army on May 18, 2020, during a raid on his residence in Jendeires town which is administratively a part of Afrin city in the northern suburbs of Aleppo governorate, and was subsequently taken to an undisclosed location.

We note that no member of his family was informed of his arrest, with his phones being confiscated, preventing him from contacting any family members. SNHR fears that he will be subjected to torture and ultimately classified as forcibly ‘disappeared’, like approximately 85 percent of those detained by the regime.

SNHR can confirm that at least 3,045 Syrian citizens are also still detained in the detention centers run by factions of the armed opposition, constituting a grave threat to the detainees’ wellbeing given the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
