On March 23, 2023, a boy, identified as 13-year-old Habib Mahmoud al-Hmadi from Jub Makhzoum village to the southwest of Manbij city in eastern rural Aleppo governorate, was killed, and three other children were injured, by the explosion of a landmine of unidentified source while they were herding sheep in the badiya ‘desert area’ in southern Raqqa city. The area is under the control of the current transitional authorities in Syria.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) is still trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident.
SNHR calls on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities in protecting civilians in their areas and identify the locations of landmines and remove them. We have recorded hundreds of deaths and injuries from landmine explosions. Landmines pose a serious threat to civilians’ lives for years to come in these areas, particularly children.
