On January 14, 2025, a man, identified as Suhaib Qasmou, from al-Sermaniya village in western rural Hama governorate who was one of the leaders of the engineering squads affiliated with the Military Operations Command, was killed by the explosion of a landmine of unidentified source while the engineering squads were disarming landmines in Ard al-Wata village in Jabal al-Akrad district in northern rural Latakia governorate. The explosion also injured media worker Abdul Jawad Alikou. The area is under the control of the current transitional authorities in Syria.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) is trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident.
We have recorded hundreds of deaths and injuries from landmine explosions. Landmines pose a serious threat to civilians’ lives for years to come in these areas, particularly children.
