On December 9, 2023, a rainstorm hit multiple areas housing camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in northern rural Aleppo governorate. The storm led to torrential flooding, with massive pools of water forming, and large areas reduced to deep, impassable mud, cutting off roads completely. About 60 tents in 20 camps in various areas of northern rural Aleppo governorate were completely destroyed by the flooding, while 56 others were partially damaged and another 57 were left waterlogged.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that these repeated occurrences further worsen the already dire living conditions of IDPs, exacerbating their existing hardships. We urge international relief organizations, including the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), to urgently respond to the camps’ basic needs, and provide camps’ administration with additional tents for emergencies.
