Wesam Jammoul, Mohannad Jba’ie, Jabran Mezher, and Mahmoud Hassan, four players for the Suwayda Workers Futsal Club, from Suwayda governorate, were arrested on May 11, 2023, by members of the Syrian regime’s Political Security agency in a raid on the hotel in Damascus city where they were staying. They were taken to a regime detention center in Damascus city.

The arrests were carried out without any court-issued legal warrant being presented. The detainees’ families were not informed of their arrest, while their phones were seized, and they have not been allowed to contact their families or a lawyer.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) is concerned that they may be subjected to torture in detention and may go on to become yet more cases of enforced disappearance, with 85 percent of all those detained falling into this category.

We call for the provision of both material and moral reparations for the victims of such detentions and for their families, and call on all parties to put an end to all arbitrary detentions whose only purpose is to spread mass fear and extort people.
