A five-year-old child, named as Laith Mansour, internally displaced with his family from al-Rastan city in northern Homs governorate, was killed and two other children were injured, on October 28, 2022, by the explosion of a 23-mm machine gun shell, while they were playing near the IDP camp near Jdaidat village to the north of Izaz city in the northern suburbs of Aleppo governorate.

The area is under the control of the National Army forces. SNHR notes that the remnants of these weapons continue to pose a serious threat to civilians’ lives. We have released numerous reports on the subject of cluster munitions and weapon remnants, in which we called for providing the necessary equipment to help local residents with removing these lethal explosive remnants.

We have documented the repeated use of antipersonnel landmines by Syrian regime forces, which continue to pose a major, long-term threat to residents, especially children, which will last for years. We have also recorded hundreds of injuries resulting from cluster munitions remnants.

The international community needs to intervene to protect civilians in Syria from the continued devastation wrought by these munitions and weapons remnants.
