Muhammad Ammar al Zu’bei from Tafas city in Daraa governorate western suburbs, born in 1998, was arrested by Syrian regime forces in 2018. He passed a checkpoint on the road between Damascus and Daraa city. Previous to that, he had a settlement agreement.
Since then, he has been forcibly disappeared as the Syrian regime denied detaining him and hadn’t allowed anyone to visit him, even a lawyer.
On March 2, 2022, Syrian regime forces personnel informed his family that he died inside Seydnaya Military Prison in Damascus suburbs governorate. His body was released to his family on April 3, 2022, bearing torture marks. SNHR has information confirming that Muhammad was in good health when arrested, which indicated that he passed due to torture and lack of medical care.
SNHR stresses that over 132,667 Syrian citizens are still detained or forcibly disappeared in the regime’s detention centers, constituting a grave threat to the detainees’ wellbeing, given the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
SNHR notes that over 14,449 Syrian citizens have died due to torture inside the Syrian regime forces’ detention centers.
