Fatima Abdul Rahman al Ismail*, a 28-year-old woman displaced from Sfouhen village in the southern suburbs of Idlib governorate, who had been living in the Sfouhen IDP Camp, part of the Atama Camps Complex near Atama village north of Idlib governorate, was wounded by a gunshot to the head on February 10, 2022, by Hay’at Tahrir al Sham personnel near a checkpoint between the Atama area and the Deir Ballout area of Afrin city in the northwestern suburbs of Aleppo governorate.  The checkpoint where she was shot is located between areas controlled by Hay’at Tahrir al Sham and the Syrian National Army respectively. She was injured while transporting diesel fuel between the two areas.
The incident caused protests against Hay’at Tahrir al Sham in the Um al Shuhdaa and Sfouhen IDP camps in Atama Camps Complex, which were followed by Hay’at Tahrir al Sham arresting 22 civilians, including a media activist, after assaulting them. The arrests were accompanied by heavy shooting in the camp; the civilians were released a few hours later.
SNHR stresses that Hay’at Tahrir al Sham has again violated international human rights law through this attack, and insists that the perpetrators must be held accountable.
