On June 20, 2024, a Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) artillery detachment stationed in Theyban town in eastern Deir Ez-Zour governorate fired a shell at Mahkan town, located on the other side of the Euphrates River opposite the detachment. One man and three children sustained moderate injuries in the attack. The area is under the control of Syrian regime forces.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that, through the attack, the SDF has again violated UN Security Council resolutions 2139 and 2254, which prohibit indiscriminate attacks.
The SDF has also violated the rules of international humanitarian law on distinguishing between civilians and fighters, which only aims to spread panic among civilians.
