On May 27, 2024, the body of a man, identified as Shadi al-Shemmari was found bearing gunshot wounds by local residents in his hometown of al-Mazyreeb in western rural Daraa governorate. Shadi’s body was found after he had been abducted by unidentified gunmen the day before, May 26, 2024, from in front of his house in the camp of al-Mzayreeb. The area is under the control of Syrian regime forces.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that Shadi had been a member of armed opposition factions in Daraa before regime forces took control of the city in July 2018, at which time he agreed to settle his security situation with the Syrian regime. He has completely retired from military life ever since; however; he has been involved in the drug trade.

SNHR has not yet been able to identify Shadi’s killers as of this writing, with the controlling forces bearing responsibility for identifying his killers.
