On January 23, 2024, a fire, caused by a heater, broke out in a temporary residence for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in al-Ard al-Tayyeba Camp in Salwa village in northern rural Idlib governorate. An elderly man sustained second-degree burns in the blaze, which also completely destroyed the contents of the room where it broke out. The area is under the control of armed opposition factions and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that some occupants of these residences are using highly combustible materials for heating, some of which may cause explosions due to containing flammable gases.

SNHR calls on international relief organizations to meet the urgent basic needs of IDPs’ camps, and to supply the camps’ administration with additional tents for emergencies.
