In 2021, a Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) member, identified as Mohammad Hashash al-Hanthal from Hajin city in the eastern suburbs of Deir Ez-Zour governorate, was arrested by the SDF over accusation of affiliation with ISIS. He was taken to an SDF detention center in Hasaka governorate. On April 28, 2023, SDF informed his family of his death in Ghwayran Prison in Hasaka city, returning his body to his family members.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) can confirm that Mohammad was in good health at the time of his arrest, which makes it highly likely that he died due to torture and medical negligence in Ghwayran Prison.
SNHR also stresses that approximately 4,513 of the Syrian citizens arrested by the SDF are still detained and/or forcibly disappeared in SDF detention centers. We have serious concerns for their fate.
It should be noted that nearly 90 Syrian citizens have been documented as having died due to torture inside SDF detention centers.
