Since around dawn on March 6, 2023, gale-force winds have struck multiple areas in northwestern Syria, with dozens of tens in different IDP camps uprooted and sent flying, most notably the tents newly set up for victims left homeless by the devastating earthquake and the irregular tents put up by residents camping outside in in fear of more aftershocks.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights notes that the high winds might continue until Tuesday, March 7, 2023.
SNHR calls on international relief organizations, including the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, to urgently meet the basic needs of IDPs in camps, and to supply camp administrations with additional tents for emergency cases. We further stress our condemnation of Russia’s abusive veto that blocked the entry of cross-border relief aid via the al-Salama Crossing on the Syrian-Turkish border, which further disrupted the flow of humanitarian assistance.
