Jeindar Barakat, born in 1988, a member of the Kurdish Yekiti Party in Syria, from Hasaka city, who works in a currency exchange office, was arrested by Syrian Democratic Forces personnel in a raid on his workplace in the city’s al Mufti neighborhood on January 18, 2022. He was taken to an undisclosed destination.
SNHR confirms that no members of the detainee’s family were informed of his arrest, that his phone has been confiscated, and that he is prevented from communicating with his family. We fear he will be subjected to torture and ultimately be classified as forcibly disappeared, as with 85% of such detentions.
SNHR calls for financial and psychological restitution for victims and their families and for an end to all arbitrary detentions, as well as calling on the Syrian Democratic Forces to reveal the fate of thousands of individuals forcibly disappeared by them, with the objective of such detentions being to spread fear in the community and to blackmail the families. We sincerely fear for the detainees’ wellbeing, more especially due to the spread of COVID-19.
