The body of a man, named as Talal al-Mayyah, who was arrested in a raid by Syrian Democratic Forces on his home in Hasaka governorate in May 2020 and forcibly disappeared, has been handed over to his family by the SDF bearing signs of torture.
Talal, who formerly worked for the SDF-affiliated traffic police division known as ‘al Trafik’, was detained by Syrian Democratic Forces during a raid on his home in his home village of Eseila, which is administratively a part of al Qahtaniya town in the northeastern suburbs of Hasaka governorate. Following his arrest, he was classified as forcibly disappeared, with the SDF denying his arrest and preventing anyone, even a lawyer, from visiting him. On July 29, 2020, SNHR was notified that his body had been handed over to his family bearing signs of torture sustained in a detention center in Hasaka governorate.
SNHR notes that approximately 3,337 Syrian citizens are still detained or forcibly disappeared in the SDF’s detention centers, constituting a grave threat to their wellbeing.
