A man from al Mzayreeb town in the western suburbs of Daraa governorate named as Walid al Masri and his son Ahmad were arrested by members of the Syrian regime’s Military Security forces while they were passing through a checkpoint in Daraa city on July 11, 2020, and taken to an undisclosed location. SNHR notes that Ahmad was amongst those who had previously agreed to a settlement of his status.
The arrests were conducted without any legal arrest warrants being issued by a court, and no member of their family was informed of their arrest, with the phones being confiscated, preventing them from contacting their family or lawyer. SNHR fears that they will be subjected to torture and ultimately classified as forcibly ‘disappeared’ like approximately 85 percent of those detained by the regime.
SNHR notes that about 130,000 Syrian citizens are still detained in the Syrian regime’s detention centers, constituting a grave threat to their wellbeing given the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
