A man from al Bouomar village in the eastern suburbs of Deir Ez-Zour governorate, named as Muhamad Ibrahim Khalaf al Nahar, was arrested by Syrian Democratic Forces in March 2021. Since then, he has been classified as forcibly disappeared, with the SDF denying his arrest and preventing anyone, even a lawyer, from visiting him. On December 8, 2021, SDF informed his family of his death in an SDF detention center in al Qameshli city in the suburbs of Hasaka governorate without handing his body over to them. SNHR data from numerous sources confirms that he was in good health at the time of his arrest, indicating that he probably died due to torture in one of SDF detention centers.
We can confirm that at least 3,817 Syrian citizens are still detained or forcibly disappeared in the SDF’s detention centers, constituting a grave threat to the detainees’ wellbeing.
SNHR notes that approximately 71 Syrian citizens have died due to torture in SDF detention center.
