A 53-year-old man, named as Hussein Hasan Abbas, from al Bouraz village which is administratively a part of Ein al Arab city in the eastern suburbs of Aleppo governorate, was arrested in January 2021 along with his wife and two sons, Dalil and Hasan, by Syrian Democratic Forces and taken to an undisclosed location to be held as hostages to put pressure on Hussein’s third son, Shukri, to hand over himself over to the SDF, with his wife being released in May 2021. On June 24, 2021, SDF informed Hussein’s family of his death in a detention center.
SNHR data from numerous sources confirms that he was in good health at the time of his arrest, indicating that he probably died due to torture and lack of healthcare in the prison. SNHR can confirm that at least 3,796 Syrian citizens are still detained or forcibly disappeared in the SDF’s detention centers, constituting a grave threat to the detainees’ wellbeing.
We note that approximately 67 Syrian citizens have died in the SDF’s detention centers.
