A photo shared online via social media on May 24, 2021, shows members of Syria regime forces and affiliated militias destroying the roof of al Rawda Mosque in Jarjanaz town in the eastern suburbs of Idlib governorate to steal the rebar.
Local activists informed the Syrian Network for Human Rights that the town has been empty ever since the Syrian regime forces and affiliated militias seized control over it on December 23, 2019; after seizing control, these forces immediately began looting buildings of their contents, and stripping them of their cladding materials and rebar (reinforced steel bars or mesh used in masonry structures).
We can confirm that this looting is a systematic strategy used by the Syrian regime forces and pro-regime militias in all areas controlled by these forces, with the Syrian regime bombing buildings and displacing the owners and residents before pillaging them and stripping them of everything that remains. This is a barbarous multi-dimensional strategy followed by the Syrian regime to maximise victims’ suffering. The SNHR has been working for several months on an expanded report analyzing this systematic phenomenon seen in multiple regions of various Syrian governorates.
