Two children, named as Athad Ibrahim Hussein and Delyar Hammou Hussein, aged 12 and 11 respectively, were killed on April 11, 2021, while other children were injured, when a landmine of so-far unknown source exploded near an area where they were playing in Joudi Mazen village, which is administratively a part of Afrin city in the northern suburbs of Aleppo governorate, which is controlled by the Syrian National Army. SNHR is still trying to contact witnesses to obtain more details of the incident.
SNHR calls on the controlling forces in each area to bear responsibility for protecting civilians in the areas under their control, to reveal the sites of all landmines planted there and to remove them. We have documented hundreds of deaths and injuries resulting from landmine explosions, which will continue to constitute a real threat to people, particularly children, for several years to come.
