This photo shows students in an overcrowded elementary school in Serghaya town in Damascus suburbs governorate where students and teaching staff ignore the importance of wearing masks and maintaining social distancing which violates all the precautionary measures introduced to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic among the public at the beginning of the new 2020-21 school year which was announced by the Syrian regime’s education ministry on September 13, 2020.
SNHR notes that, in light of the spread of COVID-19 cases in Syria, the start of the educational year in the areas controlled by Syrian regime forces will cause a rise in disease infection cases, especially given the high number of pupils in each school classroom, which may reach 40 per class, which is a blatant violation of precautionary measures introduced to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. The number of confirmed infection cases in the areas controlled by the Syrian regime forces has now reached 3,506, including 152 deaths according to a statement issued by the regime’s health ministry on September 12, 2020.
The Syrian regime is failing to stop the COVID-19 pandemic from spreading among Syrian citizens due to its failure to implement the precautionary measures stipulated by the World Health Organization.
