A 40-year-old man from Atama village in the northern suburbs of Idlib governorate, named as Muhammad al Muhtaseb, was arrested by Hayat Tahrir al Sham personnel on August 29 in connection with his participation in an anti-HTS protest that took place in the village, and taken to an undisclosed location.
SNHR notes that no member of Muhammad’s family was informed of the reasons for his arrest, and he was prevented from contacting his family. SNHR fears that he will be subjected to torture and ultimately classified as forcibly ‘disappeared’ like approximately 85 percent of all those detained in Syria.
SNHR notes that approximately 2,116 Syrian citizens are still detained or forcibly disappeared in the HTS’s detention centers, constituting a grave threat to their wellbeing given the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
