Two children Muhammad Hussein al Saleh and Abboud Saleh al Saleh, aged 11 and 8 respectively, were killed on August 2, 2020, when a munition amongst remnants left over from previous shelling of unknown origin exploded in al Thawra village in al Jalaba village which is administratively a part of Tal Abyad city in the northern suburbs of Raqqa governorate. We are unable to identify the type of munition up to the writing of this news. Such munitions will continue to constitute a real threat to people. SNHR has issued a number of reports on cluster munitions and the remnants of other weapons, in which we urged the provision of special equipment to help civilians in removing these explosive remnants.
SNHR has also documented the Syrian regime’s use of anti-personnel mines which will continue to constitute a grave threat to residents of these areas, particularly children, for many years to come. We have recorded hundreds of injuries caused by the explosion of remnants of cluster munitions, and the international community must intervene to protect civilians in Syria from these ongoing killing operations.
