A 14-year- old boy, Hamzah Ibrahim, who was displaced from Khanaser town in the eastern suburbs of Aleppo governorate, was killed on June 28, 2020, when a shell of unknown origin left behind from previous bombing exploded on the road linking Asnbel village and Marea city in the eastern suburbs of Aleppo governorate. The remnants of weapons continue to constitute a real and lethal threat to civilians in the areas controlled by factions of the Armed Opposition and Hay’at Tahrir al Sham. SNHR has issued a number of reports on cluster munitions and the remnants of other weapons, in which we urged the provision of special equipment to help civilians in removing these explosive remnants.

SNHR has also documented the Syrian regime’s use of anti-personnel mines which will continue to constitute a grave threat to residents of these areas, particularly children, for many years to come. We have recorded hundreds of injuries caused by the explosion of remnants of cluster munitions, and the international community must intervene to protect civilians in Syria from these ongoing killing operations.
