On January 20, 2025, the body of Ismail Fattah, member of the General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council, was found by local residents in al-Qahtaniya town in northeastern Hasaka governorate. Ismail was abducted by unidentified gunmen four days earlier on January 16, 2025. The area is under the control of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) has not yet been able to identify which party is responsible for Ismail’s death as of this writing. The controlling forces must uphold their responsibilities in identifying his killers.
