On January 15, 2025, a drone, believed to be operated by the US-led International Coalition forces, fired three rockets targeting a motorbike on the al-Qal’a-Sarmada road in western Sarmada city in northern rural Idlib governorate. The attack killed on boy, identified as Hammoud Nayef al-Iliwi from al-Ankawi village in western rural Hama governorate, born in 2009, when he was walking close to the motorbike. The area is under the control of the current transitional authorities in Syria.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that a member of Hurras al-Din group was killed in the same incident.
US-led International Coalition forces have violated international humanitarian law by killing civilians through this indiscriminate or deliberate bombardment, as they have failed to distinguish between civilians and fighters. SNHR has recorded thousands of civilian deaths at the hands of the US-led International Coalition forces since the launch of their intervention in Syria on September 23, 2014. Over 3,000 civilians have been killed by these forces. The international community must intervene to protect civilians in Syria from the continued killings.
