A man, identified as Jasim Mohammad al-Hannan from Mahkan town in eastern rural Deir Ez-Zour governorate, was killed on January 6, 2025, by the explosion of a landmine of unidentified source in the badiya ‘desert area’ of Mahkan town. The area is under the control of the current transitional authorities in Syria.

SNHR calls on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities in protecting civilians in their areas and identify the locations of landmines and remove them. We have recorded hundreds of deaths and injuries from landmine explosions. Landmines pose a serious threat to civilians’ lives for years to come in these areas, particularly children.
