On November 27, 2024, Syrian regime forces used a rocket launcher to fire multiple rockets carrying internationally prohibited cluster submunitions on al-Atareb city in western rural Aleppo governorate. The rockets struck the popular market, as well as houses, injuring 11 civilians, including five children and two women. The area targeted is under the control of armed opposition factions and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that through this attack, Syrian regime forces have again unequivocally violated UN Security Council resolutions 2139 & 2254, both of which categorically prohibit indiscriminate attacks, as well as violating the rules of international humanitarian law on distinguishing between civilians and members.
We have recorded hundreds of attacks in which regime forces used cluster munitions against civilian populations, which pose a serious threat that last years to come, particularly on children. We have recorded hundreds of injuries from cluster remnants. The international community must intervene to protect the civilians in Syria from the ongoing bloodbath.
