Four children sustained severe wounds and burn injuries on March 5, 2024, from the explosion of a war remnant of as yet unidentified source while they were playing in the ruins of a destroyed, currently inoperative school, in Ma’mal al-Sukkar area on the southeastern outskirts of Jisr al-Shoghour city in western rural Idlib governorate. The children were transferred to a hospital for treatment. The area is under the control of armed opposition factions and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that the area in question had been bombed on multiple occasions by Russian forces, with one of the attacks resulting in a massacre.

SNHR notes that war remnants continue to pose a serious threat to civilians’ lives. We have released numerous reports on cluster munitions and other war remnants, calling for securing equipment to help local residents to safely dispose of the various explosive remnants.
