A man, identified as Shadi al-Khalaf al-Nouman, was injured on January 18, 2024, in an artillery attack by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) when they fired a shell at Shadi’s home city of Sbaikhan in eastern rural Deir Ez-Zour governorate, with the shelling originating from the SDf-held village of Abu Hardoub on the opposite bank of the Euphrates River. The city is under the control of Syrian regime forces.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights notes that, through this attack, the SDF has again categorically violated UN Security Council resolutions 2139 and 2254 which prohibit indiscriminate attacks.
The SDF has also again violated international humanitarian law on distinguishing between civilians and fighters, which create mass fear among civilians.
