A man, identified as Yasser al-Khalaf al-Hamad al-Matlak, was shot dead on January 8, 2024, by gunmen we have not been able to identify when they raided his house in his hometown of al-Hawayej town in eastern rural Deir Ez-Zour governorate, shooting him directly at close range. Yasser’s son also sustained injuries to his feet in the attack. The area is under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The Syrian Network for Human Rights is still trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident.

We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians in their areas, to investigate this incident, and to make the investigation’s findings known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a genuine political transition process towards democracy within a fixed timetable.
