On December 17, 2023, the body of 33-year-old Mohammad Ali al-Sabti, an agricultural worker from Karim al-Janoubi village in eastern Daraa governorate, was found by local residents in al-Mzayreeb town in western Daraa governorate, bearing multiple gunshot wounds. Mohammad’s family had lost contact with him a few days before his body was discovered. The area is under the control of Syrian regime forces.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that Mohammad had been an armed opposition fighter, until July 2018 when Syrian regime forces re-established control over the area, at which point he agreed to a security settlement with the Syrian regime. He had been completely retired from military life since then.

SNHR has not been able to identify Mohammad’s killers as of this writing. The controlling forces bear responsibility for identifying his killers.
