A 14-year-old boy, identified as Ibrahim al-Khalil Al-Mohammad al-Hussein, was killed on August 19, 2023, by the explosion of a war remnant, a projectile left from previous shelling whose source we have not yet been able to identify, while he was herding sheep in Um al-Baramil village in northern rural Raqqa governorate near the international highway M4.
The area is under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that war remnants continue to pose a serious threat to civilians’ lives. We have released numerous reports on cluster munitions and other war remnants, calling for securing equipment to help local residents safely dispose of the various explosive remnants.
We have also documented the repeated use of antipersonnel landmines by Syrian regime forces, which continue to pose a major, long-term threat to residents, especially children, which will last for years. We have recorded hundreds of injuries resulting from these weapons and cluster munitions remnants. The international community needs to intervene to protect civilians in Syria from the ongoing bloodbath.
