A man, identified as Barakat Khalil Hassan al-Ibrahim, was shot dead on August 12, 2023, by personnel from the Syrian National Army’s (SNA) Civilian Police Force. The police officers shot Barakat in his home village of Mazra’et al-Ula, administratively a part of Akhtarin town, in northern rural Aleppo governorate during crossfire after he resisted arrest over charges related to possessing and dealing in narcotics.
The area is under the control of the SNA. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that, through this killing and similar acts, SNA has violated international human rights law. The perpetrators must be held accountable.
