Two children, identified as Hussein Khaled al-Hassoun and Majid Thafer Khalil al-Zakkiya, were killed on August 4, 2023, by the explosion of a war remnant whose source we have not yet been able to identify, while they were playing near al-Ma’ari School in al-Boukamal city in eastern Deir Ez-Zour govenrorate. The explosion also critically wounded two other children.

The area is under the control of Syrian regime forces. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that war remnants continue to pose a serious threat to civilians’ lives. We have released numerous reports on cluster munitions and other war remnants, calling for securing equipment to help local residents dispose of the various explosive remnants.
