Three civilians – two 11-year-old boys named as Abdul Rahman Hamid al-Ahmad and Hassan Ali al-Ibeid – and a civilian police officer Ismail al-Jad’an al-Abboud – were shot dead on July 5, 2023, when they were caught in crossfire at a Syrian National Army (SNA) checkpoint in Ras al-Ein city in the suburbs of Hasaka governorate during armed clashes between personnel from the SNA’s ‘Ferqat al-Sultan’ (Al-Sultan Squad), and the civilian police officers manning the checkpoint.

The area is under the control of the SNA. The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) has not yet been able to identify which of the two parties were responsible for the death of the three victims. We condemn these killings and call on the SNA to shoulder its responsibilities and hold the perpetrators accountable.
