Two men, identified as Akram Bitar andHazem Najjar both aged 50 from Hama city, were arrested on June 6, 2023, byHay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) personnel in Idlib city. They were taken to anundisclosed location.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notesthat the detainees’ phones were seized following their arrest, and they have notbeen allowed to contact their families.
SNHR is concerned that they may be subjected to torture in detention and may goon to become yet more enforced disappearance cases, with 85% of all thosedetained in Syria falling into this category.
We call for the provision of reparations for the victims and their families, both materially and morally, and call on all parties to put an end to allarbitrary detentions whose only purpose is to spread mass fear and extortpeople.
We also call for revealing the fates of thousands of people forciblydisappeared at the hands of the HTS.
