Ibrahim Mahmoud Al Shahnou and Omar Abdul Basil Al Shahnou were shot dead on March 31, 2023, by gunmen we have not yet been able to identify on the road connecting Qebtan village and Akhtarin town in the northern suburbs of Aleppo. The area is under the control of the Syrian National Army (SNA).

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that, while the victims were both members of the civilian police force which is affiliated with the SNA’s General Staff, they were off-duty and as such were civilians at the time of their murder.

SNHR is still trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident. We call on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities in protecting civilians in their areas and to investigate the incident and make the findings of the investigation known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a genuine political transition process towards democracy according to an established timetable.
