On March 16, 2023, Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) carried out a raid and arrest campaign in the Alaya neighborhood al-Qameshli city, in the northeastern suburbs of Hasaka governorate. The Syrian Network for Human Rights documented the arrest of six civilians from the city in the raids, all of whom were taken to an SDF detention center in Hemo village, also in northeastern Hasaka governorate.
None of the arrested individuals’ family were notified of their arrest, while their phones were seized and they were denied the opportunity to contact their families. We are concerned that they may be subjected to torture and go on to become forcibly disappeared persons, with 85 percent of all detainees falling into this category.
We call for the provision of both material and moral reparations for the victims of such detentions and their families, and call on all parties to put an end to all arbitrary detentions whose only purpose is to spread mass fear among the public and extort people.
We also call for revealing the fate of the thousands of persons forcibly disappeared by Syrian regime SDF.
