Two civilians, a man and woman, from al-Sabha town in eastern Deir Ez-Zour governorate, identified as Mohammad Mekhlef al-Srouor and Fahmiya al-Srour, were killed on February 22, 2023, in an attack by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) personnel on a funeral in al-Sabha town, where the attacks opened fire
indiscriminately.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) notes that the funeral taking place was for Hasan al-Srour who had been shot dead one day before, also by SDF personnel. The attack on the funeral was reportedly carried out in retaliation for attacks on a number of SDF checkpoints and patrols in the town involving one ofthe dead man’s relatives.
SNHR notes that, through the act of killing, the SDF has once again violated international human rights law. Those responsible must be held accountable.
