Abdul Hamid Walid Diab was killed and another person wounded on April 15, 2022 by the explosion of remnants of cluster munitions left by previous Syrian-Russian alliance forces’ bombardment of al Shamali neighborhood in Jisr al Shoghour city in Idlib governorate’s Western suburbs.
The city is currently under the joint control of the armed opposition and Hay’at Tahrir al Sham. SNHR notes that weapons remnants remain a serious threat to civilians, and recalls that we have issued many reports on cluster munitions and weapons remnants, as well as calling for special equipment to help residents remove all the different types of explosive materials.
SNHR has also documented the Syrian regime’s use of antipersonnel mines, which will continue to constitute a grave threat to civilians, especially children, for years to come. We have documented hundreds of injuries caused by cluster munitions remnants, and emphasize that the international community must intervene to protect civilians from these continuous killings.
