Zaher Sawaf and Mohammad Abdul Baqi, both from Mar’yan village in Jabal al Zawiya in Idlib governorate’s southern suburbs, were killed on January 24, 2022 by the explosion of munitions remnants left by previous bombing, whose source we were unable to identify, inside a house in the village, where the remnants of bombing and munitions had been stored for dis-assembling and selling for their components.
SNHR stresses that explosive weapons remnants remain a severe threat to civilians. We have issued many reports on cluster munitions and weapons remnants and called for equipment to be provided to help locals in removing these explosive remnants. SNHR also documented the Syrian regime’s use of individual landmines which will threaten the region’s residents, especially children, for many years to come, unless action is taken to defuse and remove them. We have recorded hundreds of injuries resulting from cluster munition remnants. SNHR stresses that the international community must intervene to save lives and protect innocent people from such dangers which continue to pose a lethal threat to civilians’ lives in Syria
