A man, identified as Jasim Hassoun al-Hassan from Qal’at Najm village in the rural areas of Manbij city in eastern Aleppo governorate, was shot dead on Monday, April 21, 2025, by a sniper from Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) near Qal’at Najm village. The area is under the control of the current transitional authorities in Syria.
According to information obtained by the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) from reliable local sources, an SDF sniper shot Jasim, who works as a fisherman, while he was fishing by the Euphrates River near the village, which led to his immediate death. It should be noted that fishermen returned to their work following the agreement struck between the transitional government and the SDF, after the latter had imposed a ban on fishing before the agreement.
SNHR strongly condemns this killing, which constitutes a blatant violation of international human rights law, particularly the right to life. International human rights law prohibits all forms of extrajudicial killings, as well as arbitrary and summary executions.
SNHR must also stress that an independent investigation must be immediately launched into this incident, those found responsible must be held accountable, victims must be compensated, and that it is ensured that such violations must not be repeated in the future.
