On February 1, 2025, the dead bodies of two men, identified as Bashar Ibrahim al-Askar from Ghranij town in eastern Deir Ez-Zour governorate and Shehab Bashir Shkour from Mghala Kabira village in eastern Raqqa, were found bearing gunshot wounds by local residents in Hwiyjet Smouma in southern Raqqa governorate. The two worked as vendors in popular markets and lived in Ratla village in southern Raqqa governorate. The area is under the control of Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) has not yet been able to identify who is responsible for Bashar’s and Shehab’s deaths as of this writing. The controlling forces must uphold their responsibilities in identifying their killers.
