A man, identified as Mohammad Omar Barakat from Saghounaka village, administratively a part of Sherawa subdistrict, in the rural areas of Afrin city in northwestern rural Aleppo governorate, was killed on January 18, 2025, by the explosion of a landmine of unidentified source in an abandoned house on the outskirts of Saghounaka village. The area is under the control of the Syrian National Army (SNA).

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) is trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident.
SNHR calls on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities in protecting civilians in their areas and identify the locations of landmines and remove them. We have recorded hundreds of deaths and injuries from landmine explosions. Landmines pose a serious threat to civilians’ lives for years to come in these areas, particularly children.
