A boy, identified as 17-year-old Fayez Athyan al-Jali from al-Boukamal city in eastern rural Deir Ez-Zour governorate, was killed on January 12, 2025, by the explosion of a landmine of unidentified source while herding sheep in the badiya ‘desert’ area of al-Boukamal city. The area is under the control of the current transitional authorities in Syria.

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) is trying to locate eyewitnesses to obtain more information about the incident.
SNHR calls on the controlling forces to uphold their responsibilities in protecting civilians in their areas and identify the locations of landmines and remove them. We have recorded hundreds of deaths and injuries from landmine explosions. Landmines pose a serious threat to civilians’ lives for years to come in these areas, particularly children.
